2019 Turkey Trot Updates

Turkey Trot 5K logoANOTHER GREAT TURNOUT FOR THE 11TH ANNUAL SEACOAST TURKEY TROT 5K!

The day started out a little rainy, but even the rain couldn't keep away the 2,000 runners/walkers and family members who came out to support the 11th Annual Turkey Trot 5K race in downtown Portsmouth. It's like a giant, family reunion every year that we get to be a part of.

We'd like to extend a HUGE THANK YOU to our sponsors one more time and to all those who volunteered Thanksgiving morning. The race wouldn't be possible without either of them.  And thank you to Millennium who has been a great partner for many years now. Enjoy the rest of the year and check back in to see when the 2020 Turkey Trot tickets will go on sale.

2019 Turkey Trot Beneficiaries Named

seacoast community schoolThe Seacoast Rotary club has selected the two 2019 beneficiaries for their annual Turkey Trot 5k race on Thanksgiving morning. This year’s two beneficiaries are Hospice Help Foundation and Seacoast Community School. Each organization will receive sponsorship monies up to each $10,000. Registration proceeds are then allocated in the spring through a small grant program offered by the Seacoast Rotary Club.

The Seacoast Rotary Club is a fusion of young professionals, new parents, members of law enforcement and the fire departments, Real Estate agents, non-profit professionals, Boy Scout leaders, a diverse set of bankers/financial managers, and even a member in her eighties who swims every single morning and still travels the globe on Rotary missions. Hospice HelpIf you are interested in learning more about the club, what we do or how you can become a Turkey Trot sponsor please email us. Or join us for breakfast on Thursday mornings, 7:30AM at Café Espresso on Islington St (in the Hannaford & Cleary Cleaners Shopping plaza).

SOUND THE ALARM!

Saturday, November 16th our Club teamed up with the American Red Cross and the Portsmouth Fire Department to ‘Sound the Alarm’ raising awareness about fire safety and prevention. The group split up into teams tackling several different Portsmouth neighborhoods going door to door checking in with people to make sure they had working smoke/carbon monoxide detectors.

In total 122 smoke alarms were installed into 52 homes. Not a bad day!
Thank you to Charles Hall and his team with the American Red Cross and THANK YOU to all the Fire Fighters who were with us.  It was pretty cool to have the engines and the ambulance as our escorts.

Thank you to the men and women for all that you do to keep our community safe!

Touch A Truck

Our Seacoast Rotary Club had a fantastic time volunteering at the Touch-A -Truck fundraiser on Saturday, September 28, 2019 at Pease International Tradeport Portsmouth (and if we don't say so, we think we're the best parking crew in the area!) This event benefitted the Richie McFarland Children’s Center, whose mission is to help young children reach their full developmental potential and to support their families through that process.

“We love helping the RMCC and this is the perfect family event to support. The energy and excitement from the kids when they see all the different trucks and buses is a blast to watch” says club member Laura Stewart.

For more information on the event and what this organization does, please visit their website.

2019 Allocations
Allocations ceremonyThis May, Seacoast Rotary presented 10 area organizations with a collective $12,500 in grants at their annual awards reception.  This year, Seacoast Rotary’s panel of 23 member reviewers were tasked with selecting 10 organizations from a pool of 29 applicants.  These ten organizations received grants ranging from $625 to $2,500 to carry out work that will impact Seacoast residents. From the pool of applicants, Seacoast Rotary also selected Hospice Help Foundation and Seacoast Community School as their 2019 Turkey Trot beneficiaries. The Turkey Trot is Seacoast Rotary’s annual 5K road race on Thanksgiving morning that draws a crowd of 2,500 participants.  On average, Turkey Trot beneficiaries are each allocated $10,000.

The mission of Hospice Help Foundation is to provide financial support for hospice patients and their families who have dire financial need in order to increase their quality of life and lift the financial and emotional burdens that accompany a terminal diagnosis. The mission of Seacoast Community School is to provide nurturing care and exceptional education for all children of the Seacoast.

Grant recipients included: Girl Scouts of the Green and White Mountains, Southeast NH Habitat for Humanity, Daniel Webster Council – Boy Scouts of America, Seacoast Family Promise, Children’s Museum of New Hampshire, Connor’s Climb, YMCA of the Seacoast, Portsmouth Symphony Orchestra, Arts In Reach, and Annie’s Angels.

Portsmouth HS Shark Tank
high school student competition awardsThe annual Portsmouth High School Business Plan Competition provides students with an opportunity to take an idea and transform it into a full business vision with a chance to bring the product or service to market.  Students gain real world experience while celebrating the entrepreneurial spirit.

The competition was created because of the amazing business leaders, professionals, and entrepreneurial minds of the school and community.

Detailed written business plans are submitted to a judging panel comprised of Seacoast Rotarians, PHS Business Advisory Board members, and alumni. The five students with the highest scores on their written plans pitch their business idea to a panel of judges, Shark Tank style.
